Types of IELTS Tests

Academic Module

Depending upon what you want to pursue in the future, you can choose to take either IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training test on Paper or Computer at an Official test centre.

The test takers may also take the IELTS Test Online, depending upon where they live.

Skill Time Number of Questions/Tasks Description Purpose
Listening 30 Minutes 4 Sections, 40 Questions You listen to a range of recordings, including monologues and conversations. Tests your ability to understand main ideas, specific details, and opinions.
Reading 60 Minutes 3 Sections, 40 Questions Texts range from descriptive to argumentative, taken from books, newspapers, and magazines. Assesses your ability to answer multiple-choice, matching, and short-answer questions.
Writing 60 Minutes 2 Tasks Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, or diagram (Academic) or write a letter (General Training).
Task 2: Write an essay.
Evaluates your ability to present an argument with proper structure and vocabulary.
Speaking 11-14 Minutes 3 Parts Part 1: General questions about yourself.
Part 2: Talk for 1-2 minutes on a given prompt.
Part 3: Discussion with the examiner.
Measures fluency, clarity, and coherence in spoken English.

Note: Each section is scored individually, and the overall band score is the average of all four sections.

IELTS Complete Syllabus

Listening

  • Conversation between two speakers in a social context.
  • Monologue in a social context (e.g., speech about local facilities).
  • Conversation between up to four speakers in an educational context.
  • Lecture in an academic context.

Reading

  • Academic Module: Three long texts ranging from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.
  • General Training Module: Extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines.

Writing

1. Academic Module:

  • Task 1: Describing and summarizing data
  • Task 2: Writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

2. General Training Module:

  • Task 1: Writing a letter requesting information or explaining a situation
  • Task 2: Writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Speaking

  • Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes).
  • Long turn (3-4 minutes) based on a task card.

The IELTS consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section evaluates a specific aspect of your English language skills.

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, consisting of three parts: Introduction, Task 1 (short speech), and Task 2 (discussion).
